German language courses for IT students (also the students of IT related courses) studying at WUST commissioned by CAPGEMINI

The project objective is offering additional opportunities to learn German at a basic level with some IT elements to students studying IT or IT related courses at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. The project encompasses also popularisation of the German language in the IT sector.

The project is financed by Capgemini. Students do not need to pay for the classes.

Project participants: Wrocław University of Science and Technology studying
IT or IT related courses, i.e. Cybersecurity, IT Automation Systems, Algorithmic Computer Science, Applied Computer Science, System Engineering, Teleinfomatics, Artificial Intelligence, Trusted Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Analytics, Electronic and Computer Engineering, and Computer Science Mathematics, and also the students of the following Faculties: Information and Communication Technology, Fundamental Problems of Technology, Electronics, Photonics and Microsystems, and Pure and Applied Mathematics.

Project goal: preparing students for work in the IT sector.

The goal is pursued by the development of the following skills:

  • communication in everyday professional situations;
  • understanding simple statements (in monologues and dialogues) on related to professional life and important information in simple messages;
  • reading comprehension and finding information in texts (e.g. emails);
  • talking about oneself, other people and known places (e.g., profession, responsibilities in IT jobs, company, city), past events (e.g. a working day), tasks are adapted to students’ language skills;
  • conversations on familiar topics;
  • simple writing forms used in professional life (e.g., writing reports) and describing a sequence of events;
  • notetaking (e.g., dates) and completing forms.

Students also develop their soft skills and learning abilities  (e.g., focusing on basic information, effective cooperation in pair- and teamwork, using available materials for self-study, using new technologies).

Project duration: 01.10.2021 – 01.07.2022

Teachers: German teachers employed at the Foreign Language Department of WUST

Where: WUST campus or online classes depending on the pandemic situation

Enrolment: enrolment for university-wide courses and a language test. An interviews is optional only.  

Project activities encompass:

I. Didactics

  • German classes for WUST students from the above listed faculties who qualified for the course start in October 2021. Plan: 1 group, level A2:
  • Term winter 2021/22:
    1. level A2 (60 hours, teacher: Krzysztof Rzemiński, M.A.),
    Term spring 2021/22:
    1. level B1 (60 hours, teacher:  Krzysztof Rzemiński, M.A.),
  • students work individually and with their teacher. They use the Virtual Learning Platform for self-study,
  • some classes are taught by Capgemini employees, (IT elements, interviews conducted in accordance with company procedures),
  • students participate in training events related to the German language and German speaking countries held in Wrocław.

II. Project promotion:

  • emphasising the need to know German in the IT sector during the courses taught at the Foreign language Department of WUST
  • organising language workshops together with course participants for WUST students,
  • visiting Capgemini to learn more about the company and find out about students work experience and internship opportunities,
  • opportunity to obtain a paid academic certificate confirming the knowledge of German.

Course completion:

Students who complete the course receive a certificate. They can use it to apply to their Faculty Dean to recognize the course as their scientific achievement (as a language course for undergraduate students, 2 ECTS, 60 hours). The conditions of course completion are specified in the Course Regulations. An additional option after course completion is obtaining a paid ACERT certificate. The details related to the ACERT exam will be given during the course.
