Start Deutsch 1 / telc Deutsch A1 is a general language exam that you can normally take after an average of 100 - 150 teaching units (45 minutes). 

What can you do at level A1?

At level A1 you can communicate in a very simple way about needs of a concrete type (e.g. introductions, food and drink, shopping, say where you live.) You can use a few very basic grammatical constructions.

What is the structure of the examination?

The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 65 minutes. The oral exam usually takes place straight after the written exam, without any preparation time.

A2

Start Deutsch 2 / telc Deutsch A2 is a general language exam that you can normally take after an average of 250 – 300 teaching units (45 minutes). The exam can be taken by anyone.

What can you do at level A2?

At level A2 you can communicate in a simple way in typical everyday situations. In a familiar context you can hold short conversations. You can use simple grammatical structures correctly.

What is the structure of the examination?

The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 70 minutes. The oral exam usually takes place straight after the written exam, without any preparation time.

Zertifikat Deutsch / telc Deutsch B1

If you already have a good basic knowledge of German, Zertifikat Deutsch / telc Deutsch B1 is the right exam for you. It tests general language competence and can be taken by anyone.

The Zertifikat Deutsch / telc Deutsch B1 is recognised as proof of sufficient language competence for a German citizenship application.

What can you do at level B1?

At level B1 you can communicate in a simple and connected way in everyday situations, while travelling and when talking about topics that are of personal interest. You can describe experiences, hopes and ambitions and give reasons for opinions. On the whole you can use the most important grammatical structures correctly.

The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes. Before the oral exam you have 20 minutes preparation time. The oral exam takes place on the day of the written exam.

telc Deutsch B2 tests your general German language competence at an advanced level. The exam can be taken by anyone.

What can you do at level B2?

At level B2 you can express yourself clearly and explicitly and also successfully discuss and negotiate. You have a large command of the vocabulary needed for your field of specialisation and for most general topics. Your usage of grammar is sound.

What is the structure of the examination?

The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 2 hours and 20 minutes. Before the oral exam you have 20 minutes preparation time. The oral exam takes place on the day of the written exam.

A2+

telc Deutsch A2+ Beruf is an exam that tests language competence in a business environment. The level is a little higher than for Start Deutsch 2 / telc Deutsch A2. The exam can be taken by anyone.

You can communicate in a simple way in typical everyday situations related to your job. You can read documents like enquiries, orders or guidelines; you can make simple telephone calls; you can speak about your work and write short messages. You can use simple grammatical structures correctly.

The exam consists of a written and an oral part. The written exam lasts 2 hours. The oral exam usually takes place straight after the written exam, without any preparation time.

telc Deutsch B1+ Beruf is an exam for professional purposes. The level is a little bit higher than Zertifikat Deutsch / telc Deutsch B1 or the B1 level version of the telc Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer A2/B1. The exam can be taken by anyone.

What can you do in work-related situations at level B1+?

You can communicate in a simple and connected way in everyday situations related to your job. You can talk about your responsibilities, your firm and its products. On the whole you can use the most important grammatical structures correctly.

You can certify your general language competence at level B2 by taking the examination telc Deutsch B2.

At level B2+ you can express yourself clearly and explicitly and also successfully discuss and negotiate. You can understand texts on both familiar and unfamiliar topics. You have a good range of vocabulary, and you can produce formal business letters, reports and minutes. Your usage of grammar is sound.
