Regulations

The Language Tournament is organised by the Department of Foreign Languages of Wrocław University of Science and Technology for students. The goal of the Tournament is improving their knowledge of foreign languages and also developing their interests in the history, science, culture and social problems of foreign countries.

The Language Tournament is organised under the patronage of the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs.

Note: In the academic year 2021/22, the Language Tournament will be organised in the winter term either in a hybrid form or online, depending on the pandemic situation. The participants will be informed about the form during the registration in November 2021.

Should it be necessary to hold the whole Tournament or its part online, the participants will be obliged to prepare suitable equipment (computer, camera, headphones, microphone) and switch on the camera.

I. PARTICIPATION REGULATIONS:

  1. Participants. The students of all study cycles and years at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, who are holders of a valid student ID, and  the participants of preparatory courses organised at the DFL WUST who register during the registration time.
  2. The students who are studying at WUST and at the same time they are studying foreign philology at a university, higher philological schools or colleges  cannot participate in the Language Tournament, the same applies to the graduates of these schools.
  3. The laureates who won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Language Tournament in the previous years and foreigners for whom English is their mother tongue or an official language in the country of their origin cannot participate in the Language Tournament.
  4. Language level at the Language Tournament:
    a. English C1
    b. German B1 /B2,
    c. Polish B2,
    d. Russian A2
    e. French B1/B2
    f. Spanish A2.
  5. The minimum number of participants of the Language Tournament in a given language is 5.
  6. The Regulations allow one participant to enter two or more language competitions in the Tournament.
  7. Participation in the Tournament is voluntary.
  8. The participants give their consent for personal data processing (name, surname, student record number).
  9. The participants’ data will be processed indefinitely.
  10. The participants hold the right to withdraw their consent to their personal data protection at any time. If the consent is withdrawn during the Tournament, the participants will be disqualified.
  11. The participants of the Tournament give their consent for the publication of their name, surname and image (photos from the award  ceremony) on the website of the of the Department of Foreign Languages.

II. TOURNAMENT STEP BY STEP:

  1. There are two stages.
  2. Stage 1 – written part of the tournament – it lasts 90 minutes and is composed of 4 parts:
    a) listening comprehension (15 points)
    b) reading comprehension (15 points)
    c) grammatical and lexical resource  (20 points)
    d) knowledge about the foreign country where the tested language is spoken (20 points).
  3. Stage 2 (final) – speaking:
    A. In the languages tested at levels B1/B2, B2 and C1 (currently, in this group there is English, German, French and Polish as a foreign language) this part encompasses: presentation (max. 10 min. at levels B1/B2, B2 and C1) on topics related to culture, history everyday life in the country where the tested language is spoken (30 points);
    B. In the languages tested at level A2 (now it is Spanish and Russian) this part encompasses: presentation (about 5 min.) on topics related to culture, history everyday life in the country where the tested language is spoken (20 points) and a response to a question asked by the commission (10 points).
  4. The Tournament participants who qualify for stage 2 (final), will receive the information about it via email.
  5. The participants of stage 2 of the Language Tournament select their presentation topic from the posted on the website of the Department of Foreign Languages.
  6. The speaking part is assessed by a commission. The following element are taken into account in the assessment:
    a grammatical and lexical accuracy
    b. richness of the language (extensive lexical and grammatical resources, ability to express opinions, argumentation)
    c. fluency (pronunciation and intonation)
    d. task achievement.
    The commission may decide to invite all finalists to listen to the presentations together and then vote which one was the best. The author of the best presentation will receive an honourable mention. Should more than one presentation receive the same number of votes, the commission will decide who received the honourable mention.
  7. The number points scored at both levels decides on the awarded place. In the written part of the Tournament, it is possible to score max. 70 points, and in the speaking part the maximum number of points is 30. The total number of points for the written and speaking part is 100.
  8. The results will be announced and the awards will be given to finalists after  stage 2 during during the awards ceremony.
  9. The awarded presentations are the property of the DFL.
  10. The participants shall be elegantly dresses during each stage of the Tournament, and they shall bring their student ID.

III. AWARDS

There are a number of awards for the laureates: cash prizes, books or other in-kind prizes, and language courses organised at the DFL to be attended during studies. The cash prize amount depends on the place awarded in the Tournament. Should any disputes arise, they will be solved by the Coordinator of the Language Tournament.

IV. ORGANIZERS: The Organizer of the Language Tournament is the Organising Committee consisting of the teachers of DFL WUST.
