The activity of the Romanian and Slavonic Languages Group is in accordance with the mission of SJO PWr., which, in reference to the European educational policy, postulates multilingualism and multiculturalism in student education.
The Group of Romance and Slavonic Languages has existed since the academic year 2012/2013. It was created by combining two language groups, which have been active at the Department of Foreign Languages of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology for several dozen years - the Russian Language Group and the Romance Languages Group.
RUSSIAN LANGUAGE has been taught at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology from the very beginning of the University's existence, and for many years the Russian language teachers formed a large, independent team at the Department for Foreign Languages.
The teaching of FRENCH LANGUAGE started in 1956 and the lecturers belonged initially to the English and Romance Languages Department. In 1964, an independent Romance Language Group was created to teach FRENCH and ITALIAN. In the 1980s the Romance Languages Department added SPANISH LANGUAGE to its curriculum.
In addition to Russian, CZECH LANGUAGE was also taught in our Group, hence the name Slavonic languages. An additional element stressing multilingualism and multiculturalism of teaching at SJO PWr. is the presence of JAPANESE LANGUAGE, taught by a native speaker of Japanese.
The Group of Romance and Slavonic Languages is therefore an heir and at the same time a continuator of achievements and traditions in teaching five foreign languages at Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
The first head of the new organisational unit at SJO PWr. - TEAM OF ROMAN AND SLAVIC LANGUAGES was MA Teresa Trochimczuk, who held this position for three years, and at the beginning of the academic year 2015/2016 MA Ewa Dmowska became the head.
The members of the Team constitute a qualified group of academic teachers who teach general and specialist language. We run classes at different levels of language proficiency, at first, second and third degree, at full-time and part-time studies. Each semester we create several dozen groups, which are very popular among students of the University. Thanks to our offer, young people have an opportunity to learn foreign languages that are less popular than English, but nevertheless important and useful, which increases their chances on the national and international education and job market. The Department of Romance and Slavonic Languages, through its didactic and extra-didactic work, also contributes to the process of internationalisation of the University, strengthening the intercultural dialogue between young Poles and other nations.
All our lecturers are involved in SJO's extra-didactic activities, taking part in the following cyclical events:
- Language Tournament
- Language Juwenalia
- Lower Silesian Science Festival, as part of which we conduct numerous workshops and presentations for young people
- workshops and presentations for students promoting all our languages.
Members of the Team are very actively involved in university, national and international projects.
Between 2013 and 2015 we carried out an international project at SJO: Santander Universidades, promoting the Spanish language and knowledge of Spanish-speaking countries.
Since 2016/2017 we have participated in the implementation of our Study project: Share your culture, share your language.
We prepare numerous materials to support the learning process posted in the Virtual Learning Environment, as well as articles and presentations on the languages and culture taught for the Student Passage.
We run paid training courses for PWR. students and employees, and organise paid ACERT certificate exams.
