Description of language courses

1st study cycle (Bachelor of Engineering / Bachelor of Science degree)

Each student is awarded 120 hours for foreign language courses. The 60-hour courses are held twice a week, in 90-minute blocks. The B2.2 level is a minimum language course level required from a student in the first study cycle. The student must obtain a total of 6 ECTS points for the language courses in the first study cycle.

As part of their 120-hour allowance, each student is obliged to complete a B2.2 or C1.2 course. Please review the available pathways for completing the language course available under this link.

In the case of 1st cycle study programmes in English, the student is obliged to complete 120 hours at the C level (i.e. 60 hours at C1.1 level and 60 hours at C1.2 level) of the language of instruction in their study programme or – with the approval of the Faculty Council – of another foreign language at any level (e.g. “Polish as a foreign language” at level A1). A student who is a Polish citizen is not allowed to use a Polish as a foreign language course to credit their foreign language course.

If a student graduated from a secondary school with a foreign language level lower than B1, they should consider:

• taking foreign language courses already in their first year of study, by participating in foreign language courses from outside the study programme,
• participating in paid language improvement courses offered by the Department of Foreign Languages – the offer is updated every semester.
• independently improving their language skills, e.g. by using the teaching materials prepared by the Department of Foreign Languages instructors, by participating in online language courses, etc.

2nd study cycle (Master of Engineering degree)

Each student is awarded 90 hours for foreign language courses:

30 hours to continue the first language they had passed at level B2.2 or C1.2 during their first cycle of studies – i.e. to take a B2+ or C1+ technical language course (the C1+ technical language course is available only in English); and 60 hours to learn a second foreign language at A1, A2 or B2 level.

The B2+ courses (C1+ only in English) are held once a week and last 90 minutes. The second language courses are held twice a week, in 90-minute blocks.

The student must obtain a total of 5 ECTS points for the language courses in the second study cycle.

The student is not allowed to use a language course from their first study cycle to credit a language course in the second cycle. If the student completed an e.g. A1-level second language course in their first study cycle, then in their second cycle they should choose the same language in a higher level, e.g. A2, or choose a third language at any level.

Long-cycle master's programmes (Faculty of Medicine)

The student is obliged to complete 120 hours of language courses (4 times 30 hours) in long-cycle master's programmes (Faculty of Medicine) for a total of 8 ECTS points, to achieve language proficiency at a level of at least B2+ (CEFR) in English in the field of medical sciences (starting in their second study semester), and 60 hours’ worth 3 ECTS points to study a chosen second foreign language at any level offered by the Department of Foreign Languages.
